Professionally, Narendra Murty worked as a Divisional Manager in the Life Insurance industry. However, the deep driving passion of his life has been the study of various religions and philosophies - both Eastern and Western - to which he has devoted more than three decades of his life. His first book EATING HIS MONEY – The Antics of a Metaphysical Clown, contains his commentaries on twenty-five stories of Mulla Nasrudin, the enigmatic clown. The book is an expression of his understanding of Sufi philosophy which he illustrates with concepts derived from all the wisdom traditions of the world making this subtle knowledge easily accessible to the general lay readers.
Adjudged the Best Book in the Pioneer Literature Awards, 2024, his second book AN ODYSSEY OF THE MIND – Journeys in the Modern Mindscape, is a collection of twenty deeply thought-provoking essays written over a period of ten years. The subjects include psychology, philosophy, history, sociology, the impact of technology, ecology, political philosophy and even a couple of humourous and satirical jibes on our politics, society and culture.
His third book titled THE RELIGION OF WONDER is an attempt to define religion outside the context and framework of the organized religions. It is also a call to all atheists and agnostics to sincerely explore their own negation.
Winner of the LIFT Awards 2024, Indian Awaz Foundation Awards 2024 and the prestigious Yatha Katha Film & Literature Awards, 2024, his fourth book is on Zen Buddhism titled AN OAK TREE IN THE GARDEN - Exploring the World of Zen where he has provided enlightening commentaries on thirty enigmatic and enchanting Zen stories.
His fifth book SERMONS OF THE DEAD contains imaginary conversations with Socrates, Jesus, Mansur, Joan of Arc, Galileo and Gandhi - the six great martyrs of history.
Presently he is devoted full time to his study and writing. Narendra is also working as a Research Associate at Sri Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry and writes every month for their online journal Renaissance. More information about all the areas of his work is available on his author website.
BOOK REVIEW :
Narendra Murty’s Sermons of the Dead is a soaring exploration of philosophy, wisdom, and timeless debates, brought to life through an ingenious premise: imaginary conversations with six of history’s greatest martyrs—Socrates, Jesus, Joan of Arc, Galileo, Gandhi, and Mansur al Hallaj. This thought-provoking book invites readers to engage with crucial questions about war, religion, governance, and the essence of the “good life,” as seen through the lens of these noble figures.
Having read several works by Narendra Murty, I can confidently say this book stands as one of his most compelling. Known for his balanced perspective on Indian and Western political thinkers, Murty once again bridges cultural and philosophical divides with clarity and depth.
This book is seperated into three parts. In the first part, there is an interview and conversion between political thinkers. In part two the author has discussed few conflicting topics with logical arguments. In part three, the author has accumulated the final messages of the arguably the great political thinkers of all time.
All the parts are unique and has its own impacts however I have liked the part two where the author has discussed the eternal debates. The debate between " Authoritarianism and Democracy " and " Science vs Religion " has made my thoughts more rational and helped me to rethink few areas.
Now, even if you are not into philosophical non-fiction reading, this title has the capacity to make your interest grow in this genre. All the thinker's profiles are written from the basics and this is the beauty of the book, that it has made all the difficult concepts easy. Moreover, the language is also lucid.
So, don't wait ! Just grab a copy of this title and I can assure you, if you want to know the philosophical interpretation of renowned thinkers, this is the best book to enter and explore.
