BOOK REVIEW :

Some stories are not just written—they are lived, breathed, and felt in every aching silence and whispered rebellion. "Kanchhi" by Weena Pun is one such novel, a stunningly evocative debut that brings to life the rugged landscapes of rural Nepal and the quiet yet powerful defiance of a young girl who refuses to be confined by the boundaries set for her.

Set in the remote foothills of Torikhola, Kanchhi follows the life of its eponymous protagonist, a girl whose curiosity and aspirations clash with the suffocating norms of her hamlet. Kanchhi is not one to yield—she plays with boys, exchanges letters with them, and dares to imagine a life beyond the valley. And one day, she leaves. But what follows is silence. A decade passes, and Kanchhi’s absence lingers like an unresolved question. Her mother, Maiju, prays fervently for her return, while the villagers remain divided—did she chase the allure of the city, or did she become another casualty of the civil war that now encroaches upon their village?
Weena Pun masterfully weaves Kanchhi’s personal rebellion with the larger sociopolitical upheavals of the time. The novel is not just about a girl who vanishes; it is about the many Kanchhis who dare to dream but are met with forces beyond their control.

“Kanchhi” is a novel that doesn’t just tell a story; it demands to be felt. It is about longing, resilience, and the unsettling reality of how some disappearances are never truly resolved. Weena Pun has crafted a literary gem—one that resonates deeply, stirs emotions, and leaves you questioning the fate of not just Kanchhi, but of all the girls like her who yearn for more.
